Value Chemistry Ops is a lens that considers organizational success from a perspective of Individuals, Interactions, and Interfaces.

People, in relationships, are the heartbeat of your organization. Good organizational chemistry arises from strong relationships between people (human chemistry) and productive relationships with systems and tools (environment).

My view is centered on a business as existing solely to offer and deliver value and the belief that working toward a shared goal, centered on value, is a critical motivator and decision-making tool supporting organizational success.

When I observe a new client organization I’m curious about people. Specifically, why are they here?

Interactions are how things get done. They can be productive or unproductive. Many operators refer to this as “Process” but process is really how we guide interactions, not the interactions themselves. When I observe a new client organization I’m curious about your interactions. Specifically, which ones are optimized?

Interfaces are how delivery happens. They are the moments where work transitions between teams. Where value gets lost in translation. Minimizing them accelerates delivery. Optimizing them amplifies the value delivered. Interfaces are supported by tools and systems to drive success. When I observe a new client organization I’m curious about interfaces. Specifically, how many on the path to value arriving in the hands of the customer?

Individuals, interactions, and interfaces all function within an environment and are influenced by this. You need to build the right environment, alongside these ingredients, to achieve true operational excellence.

What to Expect

At the end of the 30-day observation period you’ll receive a report that will summarize my observations and provide a 60-day plan for the highest-value short-term operational wins. The report will cover 5 themes that drive operational excellence.

  • Purpose creates a common cause and strategy is how we will achieve it. Together thse form the North Star that unites the organization toward a common goal.

  • The health of living relationships is the true indicator of “culture”. Indicators of success in this area include staff reflections around trust, belonging, conflict, feedback, and learning or growth.

Organizational capabilities are derived from skills & talents present in our people; how they develop and deploy those; processes that create consistency in the deployment of skills & talents; and roles that capitalize on the true human capital available.

  • Here the primary focus is on value delivery maturity. I use a proprietary framework based on the Carnegie Mellon Software Engineering Institute’s Capability Maturity Model.

  • Here we inventory tools in use, the interfaces they serve, and what gaps remain unsupported. We look at the predictability and consistency of routines supporting value delivery.

  • Last but not least we examine role clarity, coordination & control, decision-making, feedback & performance systems, and the management of risks and consequences.

Why Value Chemistry?

According to research by Price Waterhouse Coopers, there are 3 hallmarks of a successful business.

  1. A valuable offering

  2. An understanding of organizational capabilities

  3. Execution clarity

These hallmarks translate into above average growth; above average profitability; and higher shareholder returns.

The Value Chemistry Ops Assessment provides critical perspective on where your organization is positioned with respect to these hallmarks and a plan of action to rapidly address key pain points.
